Weave Experiments

Weave Experiments || Stick Weaving

How to Make Your Own Stick WeaveI have been admiring stick weaves for a while now and I finally decided to try it out.  This is also really great for those who want to get into weaving, but don’t own a loom just yet.  It’s a perfect free loom to play around on.

I really like the rough texture of the stick next to the soft woven textures of yarn. And it wasn’t too hard to make either. My boys magically find sticks everywhere outside, so I enlisted their help for this project. We almost got all the way to the end of our walk with just thin sticks, but then we found this one and it was perfect for what I wanted. If you’d like to try weaving on a stick also here’s what I did: Continue Reading

Draft Patterns Weaving Techniques

Weaving Techniques || Weaving Small Diamonds

Beautiful small diamond weaving pattern tutorialI really love the texture that draft patterns add to weavings and today I am sharing an easy pattern for weaving small diamonds. For this pattern I tried a few different yarns; fingering weight, worsted weight, and bulky. I found that the bulky weight yarn did the best with showing the pattern, the thinner yarns bunched up on itself and the pattern didn’t show as well. If I were to use a thicker thread for my warp and a thin thread for the weft the pattern would show much better because the thicker warp would hold the weft in place better. Just something to consider when you try this. Continue Reading

Weaving Techniques || Chevron Weave Video

Finally a video on How to Chevron Weave!!As part of my reaching out to get a better understanding of what you’re looking for, a lot of you asked for more videos.  Which isn’t too surprising, since it’s much easier to follow a process when you can see it in motion.  And actually a few of you asked for a video on the chevron weave specifically, so as I’m trying to focus on making more videos I’m starting with the chevron weave.  And you get to see how to twill weave too, since the twill is a part of the chevron, so bonus! I’ve probably said this a thousand times, but I love buying hand-spun and hand-dyed yarns because the yarn is as unique as the person who made it and really adds a new level to my weaves. Weaving Issues || How to Relax a Wavy Weave

Weaving Issue | Removing waves with blockingI have a weave hanging on my wall that I finished a while ago and it’s driving me crazy.  It’s positioned off to the left of my computer and as I work, I keep noticing that this weave doesn’t sit very nicely against the wall.  It is a pieces that has plain weave along with wool roving and this drastic change from super bulky to slim is making the warp threads wave.  I have finally had enough and decided I’m going to try blocking this weave.  If you’re not familiar with blocking, it’s a technique used by knitters and crocheters to relax their finished creations.  If blocking works for knitted and crocheted fibers then it will certainly work for woven fibers.  This weave I’m fixing is already hung, but if you can do these steps prior to your weaves being hung, it’s easier.  So here’s what I did: Continue Reading
